Spanish Grades 11-12

Spanish Curriculum Grades 11-12 Focus Points

  • Making Progress in Spanish: This means that students will gradually improve their ability to speak, read, write, and understand Spanish. The idea is not to become perfect quickly but to keep getting better over time.
  • High Level of Language and Cultural Proficiency: Students aim to reach a strong understanding of both the Spanish language and the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. This includes not just speaking the language well but also understanding cultural norms, traditions, and values.
  • Tech-Enhanced Learning: We use the latest digital tools, including the interactive Realize platform, to make learning Spanish fun and engaging.

ACTFL 5Cs

These are goals set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and are known as the 5Cs. They represent key areas of learning a new language:

  1. Communication: The goal here is for students to learn how to use Spanish effectively in real-life situations. This includes being able to talk, write, listen, and read in Spanish for various purposes, like having a conversation, getting information, or expressing an opinion.

  2. Cultures: This focuses on helping students understand and appreciate the cultures of Spanish-speaking communities. It's about more than just language; it’s about understanding people’s ways of life, beliefs, and customs.

  3. Connections: This area is about linking Spanish to other subjects. For example, a student might use Spanish to learn about history, science, or art from Spanish-speaking countries. It helps students see how the language can be useful in various academic or professional fields.

  4. Comparisons: Here, students are encouraged to compare and contrast languages and cultures. This could mean looking at differences and similarities between Spanish and their own language or between their culture and that of Spanish-speaking countries. It helps in developing a deeper understanding of what language and culture are all about.

  5. Communities: The aim is to use Spanish to connect with others. This could be through speaking Spanish in their local community or with people around the world. It’s about using the language in practical, real-world situations outside the classroom.
