Mandarin 1

This introductory Mandarin Chinese course is designed to provide high school students with a solid foundation in the language, focusing on the essential skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Students will focus on practical communication topics such as greetings, nationality, time and date, family, pets and animals, school and school life, interests and dreams, and food. Students will also learn how to ask questions, express preferences, and making requests. Throughout the one-year duration of the course, students will be introduced to the Pinyin system, the standard romanization of Mandarin Chinese, which will aid in pronunciation and comprehension. The course is structured to enable students to develop proficiency in all four language domains: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Students will engage in various activities and oral and writing exercises to enhance their language skills. These activities include turn and talk, listening comprehension exercises, role-plays, vocabulary drills, and writing assignments. By practicing writing Chinese characters, students will gradually become familiar with the stroke order and structure of Chinese characters, laying the groundwork for further language development.
